GWM adopts the strategy of "excessive investment" in technical R & D to pursue industrial lead. Since 2006 GWM has invested over 4 billion yuan in R & D, and plans to invest a total of nearly 10 billion yuan by 2015.
Presently GWM has an R & D team of over 6,500 members. GWM was accredited as “post-doctoral research workstation” in May 2006, “state-accredited enterprise technology center” by five Ministries and Commissions including the National Development and Reform Commission and the Ministry of Science and Technology in September 2007, and "national innovation-oriented enterprise” in February 2011.
GWM Technology Center is capable of designing and developing passenger car, SUV and pickup series as well as powertrain, and developing over ten models simultaneously. In the fields such as vehicle modeling, engineering design, CAE, test & trial-manufacture, engine and transmission, it has formed independent technologies, standards and intellectual property.
GWM will go ahead with the strategy of "excessive investment" in technical resources and proceed to expand the R & D team to over 10,000 members by 2015.
GWM Technology Center is established based on the performance integration development system and the product platform, forming a multidisciplinary collaborative design environment. The Technology Center adopts the internationally-advanced digital design tools and V-shaped development processes to realize the synchronous design, development and validation in the entire process of the product development, effectively guaranteeing research and development quality and shortening the research and development cycle. Currently more than 20 kinds of products, including the SUV, sedan, pickup and MPV models, have been developed based on CH Platform, CHB platform, CHK platform and K platform.
The Modeling Center is the important integration of the Great Wall Motors Technology Center with a professional design team of more than 300 staff members. It is responsible for modeling design in the complete vehicle development process. It can design 9 cars' shape and appearance at the same time. The Modeling Center consists of the Frontal Analysis Department, the Creative Idea Design Department, the CAS Design Department, COLOR&TRIM Department and the Advanced Surface Design. These departments can complete all jobs in the whole process, including conceptual design, design, digital model, clay model, color and trimming, A-surface production and VR digital rendering. The Shape Design Center is equipped with the advanced coordinate measuring machine, the graphic pattern scanner, the color difference meter, the five-axis machining equipment and the completely virtual simulation evaluation system.
1 Environment-friendly Performance Development
GWM takes constant innovation and development of environment-friendly technologies as the goal, and gradually establishes the energy-saving and environment-friendly technologies development system. By application of the energy-saving control ideas and development of environment-friendly control technologies and the thermal management and control technologies, it can constantly increase the complete vehicle exhaust performance and meet with the emission regulations specified in different countries, establishing the industry-wide development system.
2 Safety Performance Development
It sets the "Security Shield of all persons" as the development principle, the "Full protection of occupants, pedestrians and cars" as the research and development base and the "vehicle safety performance development process" as the guidance; it develops vehicle by effective combination of the virtual simulation and the test and focuses on the vehicle structure crashworthiness design, the safety system integration, the pedestrian protection performance development, safety component performance pre-proving and the active safety system integration. It uses the complete vehicle safety performance technical system to ensure synchronization of the development of both vehicle safety performance and the product.
3 Reliability & Durability Development
Guided by the principle of the product full life cycle cost balance, it sets the stable use reliability as the goal. Based on vehicle reliability distribution, reliability risk analysis, robust design, simulation validation, reliability test and evaluation, it conducts the reliability engineer technologies integration and the innovation research, finally promoting continuous growth of product reliability level.
4 Dynamics Performance Development
It sets analysis of the complete vehicle stable performance, smoothness and comfort performance and the brake performance as the main working orientation. It is responsible for the dynamics performance development quality through application of dynamics performance CAE analysis, the test technologies, the dynamics software-in-the-loop and hardware-in-the-loop simulation technologies and the vehicle dynamic control system matching integration.
5 NVH Performance Development
Based on the complete vehicle NVH performance positive development technologies, it sets the vibration noise performance analysis and complete vehicle NVH performance goal setting and breakdown as the core. It studies key technologies including noise source/vibration excitation identification and separation, and the NVH performance control of the powertrain and the vehicle body, establishing the noise vibration performance control technology platform for independently-developed vehicle.
1 Hazardous Substances Inspection and Examination
The laboratory is equipped with internationally advanced inspection and examination devices, including Thermo TD-GC-MS and HPLC (USA), Brook XRD (Germany), Seiko XRF (Japan), and Agilent ICP-AES (USA). These devices may complete inspection, examination and research of toxic and hazard substances to provide strong support for the environment-friendly design.
2 Failure Analysis
It is equipped with the environmental scanning electron microscope made by FEI (USA) which may conduct the microstructure analysis and the microanalysis, up to 100 times magnification and 3nm resolution. It is in the internationally top level. In combination of Japan OLYMPUS stereo microscope and metallurgical microscope, it may conduct the failure analysis of breakage, deformation, corrosion, damage, wear and degradation for mental, nonmetal and chemical products.
3 Environmental Weather Resistance Test
It includes two parts - the complete vehicle weather resistance test room and the parts weather resistance test room. The complete vehicle weather resistance test room consists of the complete vehicle walk-in salt spray corrosion vehicle cabin and the high temperature highly humid cabin. In 2008, it has the complete vehicle enhanced corrosion resistance test ability which is nationally advanced. Parts weather resistance test room is equipped with 16 sets of environment simulation devices, including Q-SUN Xenon lamp degradation test box (USA), Q-PANEL UV degradation test box (USA) and the YEJI ozone degradation test box, which are used to provide the environment simulation and the acceleration test to increase product reliability.
Located at GWM’s Baoding New Industrial Zone (Dawangdian Industrial Parks in Xushui County), with a total investment of 1 billion yuan, a total area of about 1,140,000 square meters and a total test distance of 45 kilometers, the new test field has test pavements of ten modules and 76 typical features including high-speed circuit, dynamic square, test mountain, city square and roads for steering stability testing.
With a full length of 7,019 meters, a maximum inclination of 47 degrees and a maximum designed corner speed of 240km/h, the high-speed circuit ranks No. 1 in the country. The dynamic square is 300 meters in diameter, with the testing speed over 160km/h. The domestic initiative and world leading city square can be used to test Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) and Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). The high-speed circuit embraces a vehicle and parts plant, setting a precedent in the country; various test roads are arranged compactly with a high land utility rate.
Founded in 2006, as an integral part of national-level GWM Technology Center, GWM Engineering Center undertakes new vehicle process development and design, plant planning and construction, production line automation and labor-saving integrated application, seeks to become "the domestic process technology leader" and build "domestic benchmark projects", and covers relevant specialties such as SE analysis, stamping, bodywork, coating, general assembly, equipment, automation and engineering construction. It’s staffed with over 1,500 senior talents in various fields, including over 700 senior technical talents at all levels. It has mastered the core technologies such as four-process simultaneous engineering (SE), digital analog simulation, vehicle production line design, automated integration, production technology preparation and early quality stabilization and improvement, and has formed a perfect independent R & D system.
Established in March 2005 with building area of 36,500 square meters and total assets of RMB 500 million, it’s responsible for developing, designing and producing vehicle cover pressing die, thick-plank vehicle bridge and carriage die, lighting fixture die, die-casting mold and edge-covering die, boasting the capability of developing four whole vehicle dies annually.
